Clerk and Recorder's Office
The Clerk and Recorder's Office administers election procedures and voter registration, acts as agent for the State Department of Revenue to handle motor vehicle and driver’s license transactions, issues marriage and civil union licenses, handles liquor licensing, records real estate and other legal documents for posterity and reference, and serves as clerk of the Board of County Commissioners. The County Clerk shall be, in and for her county, Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners.
Responsibilities of the Recording Department
The recording department is responsible for processing and preserving documents presented for recording as public record. Permanent record is kept on microfilm and optical images. Some records date back to 1865. All records are open to the public and certified copies of any document of record are available for a fee. Included in the records are: real estate records, military discharges, school records (limited information), maps and plats, marriage licenses and civil unions.
Responsibilities of the Elections Department
The election department is responsible for voter registration: compilation of ballots, absentee ballots, and early voting ballots for the regular primary, general and special county elections; training of election judges; conduct of election day procedures; tabulation of election day results, and certification of the election with the County Canvass Board.
Registration as a voter may be made at either office of the Washington County Clerk and Recorder or at any municipal clerk's office of cities and towns in Washington County, or at any driver's license office. Forms to register by mail are also available at these locations.
Responsibilities of the Motor Vehicle Department
The Clerk and Recorder acts as an agent for the State of Colorado, Department of Revenue in titling and licensing all motor vehicles purchased, leased or entering the state.
All motor vehicle titles and registration requirements are set by state statute or set by rule and regulation promulgated by the Department of Revenue.
